From Caye Caulkner I took a boat to Mexico. I highly recommend this method of transport into Mexico. The boat was a small speed boat, and it nipped through the estuaries and past the coast of coral atolls. Flying fish skimmed along as we travelled past and sea birds circled overhead. Before long we were going through customs in Chetumal, Mexico. The customs office was right on the sea, possibly the loveliest border crossing ever.
From Chetumal I took the bus up to Merida. The next morning I explored Merida by bike. It has some interesting old Spanish buildings. One of the buildings I didn't like so much though, it was home to a wealthy Spanish family who decorated the outside of their townhouse with fretwork depicting the cruel conquest of the Mayans by the Spanish. Creepy.
The speed boat to Mexico!
I really liked the food however. In one meal alone I had 5 types of fruit and vegetables I've never eaten before, and they were delicious!
